How to Download and Install Autodesk Software (based on Revit as an example)

If you don't have an Autodesk account or an educational license, you can follow our article on How to get Autodesk software (free educational subscription)

1: Go to Autodesk Education portal and sign in on the top right-corner using your @torontomu.ca email (or @ryerson.ca email if you use it for Autodesk).

2. Click on 'Get Products' to access the Autodesk software catalogue page.

3. In the new page you will be presented with the products available for download, scroll down and look for your desired program.

4. Click on 'Get product' when you have found your desired program. (Do not choose 'Revit Generative Design' if you need 'Revit')

Note : if you see 'Get started' instead of 'Get product', it means you have not signed in yet. Please sign in with your Autodesk account by clicking 'Get started'

5. Choose the desired platform, version (latest year is recommended) and language.

On a Windows computer there are two ways of downloading and installing an Autodesk product: The 'INSTALL' option is considered to be the fastest as it will download and install the program in one operation through a software web installer. The web installer uses your network connection to download the files from the web and it installs them to your computer at the same time.

The 'DOWNLOAD' option allows you to download the .sfx.exe file(s) directly from the browser in one step and install in another. Once these files are downloaded to your computer you can decide to install them offline whenever you want.

We recommend to use the 'INSTALL' option first. If you have a weak network connection or the 'INSTALL' option fails, you may find that your issues will be solved by using the 'DOWNLOAD' option.

Important note: When you use the 'INSTALL' option you will be asked to click 'Accept' before your file begins to download. By clicking accept you request an educational license for the software. Using the 'DOWNLOAD' option you will not be asked to accept terms of use and you will not be granted a subscription for the software. You will still need to click the 'INSTALL' option to accept the license agreement and get a subscription, but you will not need to follow up running the web installer - use the standalone installer downloaded through the 'DOWNLOAD' option instead. Steps are outlined below.

For Mac platform you will only have the 'DOWNLOAD' option.

Note: The download time will vary depending on your computer, and the size of the software. Make sure your hard drive has enough available space.

DOWNLOAD OPTION

1. Click 'DOWNLOAD', the .sfx.exe file(s) will begin to download.

2. In most cases there are more than one file per program and browsers are often defaulted to block multiple downloads upon one click. Keep an eye out for a pop-up or download blocker icon on your browser like the one below.

Click on the icon and give the website permission to download your multiple files by checking 'Always allow pop-ups and redirects from https://www.autodesk.com' and clicking 'Done'. If the files don't download automatically just retry downloading the files.

3. If your browser is blocking multiple downloads but you can't see a blocker icon, click on the name of your browser below to find out how to allow multiple downloads.

Google ChromeApple SafariMicrosoft EdgeInternet ExplorerMozilla Firefox.

4. Once the .sfx.exe file(s) are downloaded, Open or Run the file, if there are multiple files just open one of them and the installer will find the other files needed. You can open them directly from your browser or from your downloads folder.

5. When the Autodesk Self Extract window opens up, make sure you extract to a drive which has enough free space. for example, choose C:\Autodesk if you have plenty of free space on your C drive, or D:\Autodesk. Remember that you are just extracting the full standalone installer which you will later use for the actual installation. Actual installation requires even more space than the extracted standalone installer, so plan ahead and if you are short on space on your C:\ drive (where Windows and most of the software are usually installed), extract the standalone installer on another drive or on a USB stick.

Click 'OK' and your files will begin to be extracted.

At this point you will see this message if your browser blocked some of your .sfx.exe files. In this case click 'Close' and re-download the files from step 1.

6. The following message will appear: 'Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?' Click 'Yes

7. When the Autodesk Installer opens up, follow the default settings and click 'Install'

9. Once the Installation process is complete, click 'Start' on the Autodesk Installer to open your downloaded program.

10. When you first open the program you will be asked to sign in to your Autodesk account to activate your educational access.
